Abstract

"Social media users fracture into tribes, but social media ecosystems are globally interconnected technically, socially, culturally, and economically. At the crossroads, Huatong Sun, author of Cross-Cultural Technology Design, presents theory, method, and case studies to uncover the global interconnectedness of social media design and reorient universal design standards. Centering on the dynamics between structure and agency, Sun draws on practices theories and transnational fieldwork and articulates a critical design approach. The "CLUE2 (CLUE Squared)" framework extends from situated activity to social practice, and connects macro institutions with micro interactions to redress asymmetrical relations in everyday life. Why were Japanese users not crazed about Facebook? Would Twitter have had been more successful than its copycat Weibo in China if not banned? How did mobilities and value propositions play out in the competition of WhatsApp, WeChat, LINE, and KakaoTalk for global growth? Illustrating the cultural entanglement with a relational view of design, Sun provides three provocative accounts of cross-cultural social media design and use. Concepts such as affordance, genre, and uptake are demonstrated as design tools to bind the material with the discursive and leap from the critical to the generative for culturally sustaining design."--

Abstract

"From Twitter to Reddit, Facebook, and WhatsApp - social media is a part of modern everyday life. Studying the language used on social media platforms presents great opportunities as well as challenges to corpus linguists. The contributions in Corpus Approaches to Social Media address technical, ethical, and methodological issues by showcasing in-depth social media studies as conducted by corpus scholars. The chapters are based on a variety of social media platforms and include corpus perspectives on the language of online communities, linguistic variation in short media texts, and the role of images in computer-mediated communication. A particularly strong point of the collection are the detailed accounts of the methodological aspects of working with social media corpora. The volume features research applying traditional corpus linguistic methods to social media data as well as novel and innovative research methods for the analysis of multimodal material and atypical corpus texts"--

Abstract

"This monograph presents the findings of a research study that examines the selected current media education problems in lower secondary pupils and their relations to said media, with the emphasis on social networks. Specifically, the research focuses on what source of information pupils use the most frequently, whether they verify the veracity of the information, photographs and user profiles on social networks and according to which criteria they decide, whether they are able to recognize, based on real examples, disinformation, hoaxes, false internet profiles and photographs, product placement, sexism in advertisements, surreptitious advertising, media stereotypes, cyberbullying and public service media, whether pupils are affected by influencers they follow on social networks."--

Abstract

"Over the last few years, social media has expanded to become a key platform for news dissemination and circulation. Nations, governments, organisations and societies are now coming to terms with the unpredictable and debilitating consequences of fake news. The propagation of fake news has been linked to an increase in measles cases, surges in youth crimes, the spread of pseudo-science, compromised national security, and more. Some even perceive it as a global threat to democratic systems around the world. In this book, the authors examine factors influencing the spread of fake news, and suggest ways to combat it by exploring the key elements which enable and facilitate this phenomenon"--

Abstract

For the last twenty years, the phenomenon of social media has cemented itself as the new nexus of social interaction. With billions of users across the world, hundreds of online platforms, and a myriad of digital technologies at its backbone, social media is fundamentally reshaping our understanding of the global information environment. Today, social media is essential infrastructure for personal conversation, public debate, and commercial communication. While social media provides many opportunities for unprecedented information sharing, the rapid adoption of limitless communication technologies with instant amplification and global reach has also created significant vulnerabilities. Social media have, in many cases, become a conduit for unsubstantiated information, such as rumours, hoaxes, and conspiracy theories.

Abstract

The growing use of digital media is awell-observed phenomenon, with 90% of adults regularly accessing the Internet, and youth use averaging at least six hours a day. Together with the increasing digitalization of private and public sector models, digital space is creating a parallel space of social activity. This activity functions in a decentralized structure and across a variety of Websites and platforms, each under its own legal regimes and stakeholders. Information flows are filtered through a few ‘points of control,’ directly impacting interaction between individuals, sovereigns, and other entities. Through popular use, social media and video platforms are becoming especially important gatekeepers. Such platforms have morphed into concentrated arenas for public discourse and attention. While this brings many benefits, it also presents a gamut of new digital manipulation threats which necessitate governance.
